The surgeon makes incisions in the bikini line above the thigh. Through these the extra flab is removed and the muscles are tightened. Then the skin is pulled up, the extra skin trimmed and sutures used to close the incisions after proper skin repositioning. For better contouring, an incision may be made along the inner thigh. A compression garments are used after surgery for better tightening results and to reduce swelling. Restricted activities may be advised for the first few days after surgery.

Liposuction Recovery Questions

Liposuction, or the surgical removal of unwanted deposits of fat, is a fairly common, low-risk cosmetic procedure. Patients who have gotten to a healthy body weight but are still struggling with unwanted bulges can benefit from this surgical procedure. If you are considering it, take some time to learn the answers to these common questions.

How long will I stay at the hospital?

For most patients, local anesthesia is all that is necessary for liposuction. As such, they can leave the hospital or surgical center soon after the procedure is done. However, if it requires general anesthesia, then the patient will need to stay in the hospital for several hours for observation to ensure the effects of the anesthesia are gone.

When will I see results?

Like most cosmetic procedures, the results of your surgery will not be completely visible for several weeks or months after the procedure. Much of what dictates how long it will take depends on the surgical techniques used and the extent of the surgery. If your doctor uses open drainage to allow fluid to drain through open incisions, you can see your results in about four weeks. For traditional procedures that include closed incisions, you may find that you are swollen for up to 10 weeks.

What type of pain will I experience?

Each patient's level of pain is going to be different. This depends on your pain tolerance, the aggressiveness of the liposuction, and even the area of the body that was treated. You should expect some pain after the anesthetic wears off. Your doctor will prescribe pain medication. Ice packs can also help, and ice will also lessen any swelling that occurs.

What kind of complications could I experience?

While liposuction is considered a low-risk surgical procedure, you may experience complications. One of the more common ones problems associated with this surgery is seromas. These are pockets of fluid that fill a cavity inside the body. This is typically not dangerous, and it will eventually resolve itself. You can also have the fluid removed by your surgeon. This is rare if the surgeon employs the open drainage technique.

How can I prepare for recovery?

Set up an area inside your home where you can rest after your procedure. Place reading material, TV remotes, pillows, blankets and prepackaged snacks in the area, and give yourself a comfy chair to rest in. a recliner is an excellent idea, because you can lay back and sleep if you want. Arrange to have your prescriptions filled prior to the procedure so you do not have to worry about this during the recovery time. Find someone who can help you get settled in your recovery area if you live by yourself. You will most likely need someone to drive you home after the procedure, so consider asking that person to stay with you until you are comfortable to ensure your needs are met.

Remember, liposuction is a major surgery, and you will need to give yourself time to rest and recuperate. Even though the outward scarring is minimal, you are changing your inner tissue significantly, and you will need to let your body heal.

Manhattan Plastic Surgeon, Gerald H. Pitman, MD, Again Selected for Best Doctors List

Dr. Gerald Pitman, a plastic surgeon in Manhattan, has been named one of New York magazine's Best Doctors for 2010. It is the 10th year Dr. Pitman has received the award. The New York magazine list is developed by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., which annually publishes a guidebook titled 'Top Doctors: New York Metro Area.' Ten percent of the region’s doctors—6,000 physicians in all—are selected for the guidebook based on the results of polling other doctors. From these 6,000 physicians Castle Connolly and New York magazine select a shorter list, which included 1,119 physicians in 2010. Dr. Pitman was one of 40 plastic surgeons on the list.

Dr. Pitman is best known for liposuction, having published a landmark textbook on the subject in 1993. He attributes his ongoing success to a constant search for improvement and refinement in technique. “Hundreds of new liposuction techniques have been developed in the past ten years. I evaluate all new techniques and new devices and use only those that provide real benefits for my patients.” Dr. Pitman’s latest evaluations can be found on his dedicated liposuction website, PitmanLiposuction.com.

Patient safety is always the first consideration in all surgical procedures. “I like to think that my unblemished safety record in performing more than 5,000 liposuction procedures is based on a critical regard for fundamental medical and surgical principles. I was fully trained as a general surgeon, operating on, and taking care of cancer and trauma patients before I even began training as a plastic surgeon.” Dr. Pitman performs many liposuction procedures under local anesthesia because it is safe. “An added benefit of local anesthesia is that there is no grogginess because sedative drugs and narcotics are not necessary,” according to Dr. Gerald Pitman.

Although Dr. Pitman is best known for liposuction in Manhattan, he is a fully-trained, board-certified plastic surgeon and performs the full range of plastic surgery procedures. Patients who cannot be helped by liposuction because of loose skin are offered other procedures such as tummy tuck. “Sometimes the tummy tuck is combined with liposuction and an operation to lift and rejuvenate the breasts. The combined procedures are called a “mommy makeover,” says Dr. Gerald Pitman.

Face and neck rejuvenation is an area of special interest and expertise for Dr. Pitman. “Many patients can obtain refined, youthful and beautiful necks through liposuction alone. If the skin is loose, however, adding a lift through mini incisions will achieve a more optimal result,” says Dr. Gerald Pitman.

About Dr. Pitman

Dr. Pitman received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. After medical school, Dr. Pitman trained in general surgery for five years at New York Presbyterian Hospital (Columbia Division) and became board-certified in general surgery. Dr. Pitman went on to a plastic surgery residency at the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at the New York University Medical Center and is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the Northeast Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the New York Regional Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. Dr. Pitman practices at Tisch Hospital at the New York University Medical Center, Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital, and the Pitman Ambulatory Surgery Center. He is a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the New York University School of Medicine.
