Manhattan Plastic Surgeon, Gerald H. Pitman, MD, Again Selected for Best Doctors List

Dr. Gerald Pitman, a plastic surgeon in Manhattan, has been named one of New York magazine's Best Doctors for 2010. It is the 10th year Dr. Pitman has received the award. The New York magazine list is developed by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., which annually publishes a guidebook titled 'Top Doctors: New York Metro Area.' Ten percent of the region’s doctors—6,000 physicians in all—are selected for the guidebook based on the results of polling other doctors. From these 6,000 physicians Castle Connolly and New York magazine select a shorter list, which included 1,119 physicians in 2010. Dr. Pitman was one of 40 plastic surgeons on the list.

Dr. Pitman is best known for liposuction, having published a landmark textbook on the subject in 1993. He attributes his ongoing success to a constant search for improvement and refinement in technique. “Hundreds of new liposuction techniques have been developed in the past ten years. I evaluate all new techniques and new devices and use only those that provide real benefits for my patients.” Dr. Pitman’s latest evaluations can be found on his dedicated liposuction website, PitmanLiposuction.com.

Patient safety is always the first consideration in all surgical procedures. “I like to think that my unblemished safety record in performing more than 5,000 liposuction procedures is based on a critical regard for fundamental medical and surgical principles. I was fully trained as a general surgeon, operating on, and taking care of cancer and trauma patients before I even began training as a plastic surgeon.” Dr. Pitman performs many liposuction procedures under local anesthesia because it is safe. “An added benefit of local anesthesia is that there is no grogginess because sedative drugs and narcotics are not necessary,” according to Dr. Gerald Pitman.

Although Dr. Pitman is best known for liposuction in Manhattan, he is a fully-trained, board-certified plastic surgeon and performs the full range of plastic surgery procedures. Patients who cannot be helped by liposuction because of loose skin are offered other procedures such as tummy tuck. “Sometimes the tummy tuck is combined with liposuction and an operation to lift and rejuvenate the breasts. The combined procedures are called a “mommy makeover,” says Dr. Gerald Pitman.

Face and neck rejuvenation is an area of special interest and expertise for Dr. Pitman. “Many patients can obtain refined, youthful and beautiful necks through liposuction alone. If the skin is loose, however, adding a lift through mini incisions will achieve a more optimal result,” says Dr. Gerald Pitman.
